College Degree Basics

A college degree is can be a wide range of status levels awarded by higher education institutions such as colleges or universities. A degree can be one of three different types, bachelors, masters or doctorate. Most standard degree programs are based on the four-year Bachelor's degree. Bachelor's degrees are most often Bachelor of Arts, B.A., or Bachelor of Science, B.S. Master's degrees are generally an extra one to two year program after you have received your Bachelor's degree. Master of Arts, M.A., or Master of Science, M.S. are two of the most popular Master's degrees. Another one to two years of schooling, plus writing a dissertation, results in a Doctorate degree, most often a doctor of philosophy, Ph.D. or other types such as Ed.D., Psy.D.

Bachelor's Degree

Bachelor's degrees are generally designed to be completed at a college or university in four years. Some programs, such as engineering or architecture, can take five years to complete. The most common types of Bachelor's degrees are Bachelor of Arts, B.A., or Bachelor of Science, B.S. Bachelor of Arts degrees are most generally awarded for successful completion of liberal arts programs, in majors such as English, humanities, history, communication arts or political science. Master's Degree

A Master's degree is an academic degree awarded to individuals who have studied to master a specific field of study or professional practice. Generally, a Master's degree involves one to two years of study beyond a Bachelor's degree. The most common types of Master's degrees are Master of Arts, M.A., or Master of Science, M.S. Master of Arts degrees are usually awarded in areas of study such as English, fine arts, history, philosophy or social sciences. Doctorate Degree

A Doctorate degree represents the highest level of education in a specific field. It also can refer to the amount of education you must have to practice medicine or law, for example. There are two different types of Doctorate degrees, research or professional. The most common types of research Doctorate degrees are Ph.D.s (Doctor of Philosophy) or Doctor of Education. The most common types of professional Doctorate degrees are M.D.s (Medical Doctor). Other areas of study that professional Doctorate degrees are given in are law, dentistry and psychology.

Associate's Degree

Some schools, mostly community colleges, offer an associate's degree for two full years of study, often in pre-professional areas. This may stand alone, or sometimes be used as credit toward completion of the four-year bachelor's degree. Common Associate's degrees are Associate of Arts, Associate of Nursing or Associate of Technology.
